Our local grocery store is just known as the "Co-op" to locals. Good spot to pick up groceries for your trip, deli sandwiches or a roasted chicken for a picnic, or to buy food to take back and eat in. Pretty much everything you need can be found there food-wise, and they even have a hardware section, plus animal feed and lumber. NSLC is next door.

This is our main post office in West Pubnico. Need to mail something or buy stamps? There is also a small post office by the large Catholic church, right in the middle of West Pubnico. Just drive and you can't miss the large white church! The post office is on the side road next door. Notice the old rock wall between the post office and church graveyard--it is one of the really old French Acadian walls that you will find all over Pubnico, especially deep in the woods on people's properties. These served as old boundary markers and also to keep animals or even water tides in/out.

Neighbourhoods

All along the harbour is the main road down through West Pubnico. As you drive south, you will pass occasional businesses, and many, many homes. A lot of these homes are 100-200+ years old, and most of the French Acadian families have lived here, descended from the original families that founded Pubnico in the mid-1600's (and after they returned from the Great Deportation). The two most commonly found last names are still d'Entremont and d'Eon. As younger folks move out to the city or elsewhere, people from out of province are moving in. However, this is still the oldest French Acadian community that still stands strong in Nova Scotia. Be sure to see the museum and the Historic Village in summer months!

From West Pubnico (turn at Petro Canada), and through East Pubnico, is Barrington Passage. It is a nice drive to Barrington, which is a town with plenty of stores and businesses. Cape Sable Island is just to the south (good for sightseeing). Sherose Island Nature Trail is also near Barrington, which has a nice walking trail with lots of painted rocks by children. Good restaurants in town too!

Exactly 1 km north of our little old farmhouse bnb is a small wharf and marina ramp called Seamen's Memorial Park. It is a nice walk there and back that only takes about 15 minutes each way, plus any time you spend there by the water. The view of Argyle Sound and its many islands is great from that location. There is parking there if you prefer to drive to the wharf.
