Peace and quiet

Guests say this home is in a quiet area.
A cozy little cottage off the Cabot Trail. Close to national park hiking trails and local barrier beaches. Nestled in one of the oldest fishing communities in the Cape Breton Highlands and just off the beaten path, the cottage offers an authentic Cape Breton fishermen's home. There is a south facing deck, harbour views, bbq, fast fiber op wifi, and fresh sea food nearby. Short drive to great beaches and hiking trails. Weekly and monthly discounts available.

The space
This lovely little cottage is cosy and full of charm. It's nestled right in an active fishing village, overlooking New Haven's Harbour; with its breakwater, wharf, lobster fishery and view out to the North Atlantic. Located one minute from Neil's Harbour, you have access to barrier beaches, national park hikes, groceries, a lighthouse ice cream shop and fresh lobster, fish and snow crab (in season). Please note you will hear the sounds of the sea from the cottage including fishing boats coming into harbour and the groaning of the whistle buoy just off the coast. The cottage is part of an old Cape Breton village so the neighbours yards are often home to piles of lobster traps, crab pots, their grandfathers fishing boats and other pieces of a nautical past.
The kitchen offers stove, microwave, fridge, and cooking/dishware. The main room offers a small table, chairs, tv and couch; and leads out onto the large front deck. The main bedroom is downstairs, right off the living area. Wireless fast fibre op internet.
The second story offers a small loft bedroom, it can be hot up there mid summer, the stairs step right out from the loft and some adults will find the space small.
Free kayak rentals for weekly and monthly stays at a nearby location.

Guest access
You have access to the whole cottage, two floors and front deck.

Other things to note
The cottage is near the coast and you are likely to hear ocean sounds such as the whistle buoy groaning, waves, wind, fishing boats and gulls cawing. Our cottage is also right in a small northern community, it is not a resort town, but rather a real Cape Breton village, where almost everyone is a fisherman. Your neighbours yards will have pieces of the past, useful items they are saving for later and fishing equipment, such as piles of lobster traps, old buoys and odd lengths of rope.
This is a small house in a real town near the sea in a northern area. Its not for everyone, but it is very affordable, so please consider your needs when booking.
As this is a northern area, guests may like to stock up on fancy wines and cheese or special items before venturing this far north. The local stores are amazing, but they don't always have the variety of a larger areas.

Neighbourhood highlights

New Haven is a tiny, busy, old world, northern little fishing community. It is not fancy by any means. As a fishing village you will hear sounds of the sea like boats coming into harbour, gulls and the groaning of the whistle buoy just outside the harbour. The village is just minutes off the world famous Cape Trail, in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Your neighbours are almost all fishermen. The village is next to Neil's Harbour which offers a grocery/liquor store, a lighthouse icecream shop, gas station, the Chowder House (iconic Cape Breton Restaurant), a lobster pound at the fish plant, a pharmacy, doctors office, two fishing wharves, Dixon's Zodiac Whale Watching and a barrier beach. Minutes from White Point Beach and Coastal Hike. Ten minutes from South Harbour Beach. Kayaking, biking, zip lining, 2 museums 15 min north. In the local area, in season, there is lobster, snow crab, halibut, mussels, oysters. The Cape Breton Highlands National Park surrounds Neil's Harbour on the eastern coast of the North Atlantic. It's an easy drive to Ingonish, Pleasant Bay, Meat Cove and the 27 park hikes in the area.

We are a little family living at the edge of the world in Northern Cape Breton. We are avid sea kayakers, hikers and bikers, not to mention cross country ski and snow shoers. Real water, rocks and trees kinda people.
